Google I/O 2023 – Introduced Google Pixel 7a

This device, which was unveiled at the 2023 Google I/O event, is just a $100 cheaper Pixel 7 with a slightly smaller screen and few other compromises. Its main camera received a megapixel boost while keeping all of the same software trickery that made last year’s Pixel 7 phones so excellent, and its performance and battery life are still outstanding.

In other words, the Pixel 7a could end up being the device that the Pixel 7 meant have been all along. Android fans in need of an update might want to take advantage of this offer before Google eliminates the most affordable smartphone option.

The Pixel 7a did not receive a big redesign from its costlier older sibling, as is customary with Pixel A-series phones. The single-tone colour scheme and recognisable metallic camera bar on the back, which sadly made the Pixel 7 far less identifiable than the Pixel 6, are back. White, black, orange, and light blue are good colour choices this time around.

The only truly moderately surprising aspect of the Pixel 7a is how closely its specifications resemble those of the Pixel 7, less than a year after that device was released. Unless otherwise stated, everything listed below is identical to the Pixel 7, including:

6.1-inch display with 90Hz refresh rate (was 6.3-inch on Pixel 7)

8GB RAM

128GB storage (Pixel 7 had a 256GB option)

Tensor G2 chipset

64MP main rear camera (was 50MP on Pixel 7)

13MP ultrawide lens

4,385mAh battery

The inclusion of a few prominent and much-appreciated features helps to explain why the Pixel 7a costs $50 more than the Pixel 6a from the previous year. The first is face unlock, which unlocks the phone so quickly that you could stop using the under-display fingerprint sensor altogether. Another significant advantage the Pixel 7a has over its previous A-series siblings is wireless charging.

I shouldn’t just skip over the Pixel A-series’ first-ever 90Hz refresh rate, though. With everything else being virtually equal and it not being an upgrade from the Pixel 7, it’s a major reason to discourage anyone from purchasing a Pixel 7 at this time. Additionally, it clearly has advantages over the Pixel 6a, which was locked to 60Hz.

Google also included the software upgrades powered by AI from the Pixel 7. The same things from the previous year are also back, including speaker identifiers for audio recordings that have been transcribed, graphical user interfaces for automated phone calls, and calls that sound clearer. While none of that is novel, having it in comparison to the Pixel 6a is useful.

Pixel 7a comes in four colors: Charcoal, Snow, Sea, and the Google Store-exclusive Coral.
